The David Childs Quartet

The David Childs Quartet is a unique ensemble. Its instrumentation comprises of trumpet/cornet, flugel horn, french horn and euphonium/trombone. David’s sister Lisa leads the ensemble, Lisa’s boyfriend Olly is the quartet’s french horn player, and David’s girlfriend Joanne is the quartet’s flugel horn player! The group have performed all over the UK, more often than not appearing with choral societies. Their repertoire is extremely varied with programs usually featuring a number of arrangements from Lisa Childs as well as solo performances from David. Alongside David Childs is:

Cornet- Lisa Childs
Since gaining a distinction in her Master’s Degree recital from the Royal Academy of Music Lisa has returned home to Wales, where she is enjoying life as a peripatetic brass teacher for Gwent Music Support Service, and currently has her hands full with some 20 schools. In addition to her teaching Lisa enjoys conducting the Torfaen Junior Wind band, Brass Ensemble and has tutored on all of the County Youth Orchestra and Brass band courses for the past three years. She is also proud to be a member of the Buy As You View band, who under the expert direction of her father, Dr Robert Childs, were ranked as the premier band in the World earlier this year.

Flugel Horn-Joanne Deane
Joanne hails from the Welsh Rhondda Valley where she was born 25 years ago. Joanne started to play the cornet at the relatively late age of 11 and by 19 she had become principal cornet of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales. Whilst studying Geology at the University of Leeds Joanne found time to play principal cornet with the Hull based EYMS Band. She led the band on many occasions including performances with the Beautiful South and at such venues as the Royal Albert Hall. Since moving back to Wales Joanne has enjoyed enormous success as the flugel player with the current Champion Band of Wales, Buy As You View. Since joining the band she has won the British Open Championships in 2002 and has enjoyed being a featured soloist on the concert and contest platform not to mention several commercial recordings.

French Horn-Oliver Fitzgerald-Lombard
Originally from Norwich Oliver moved to London, to study at the Royal College of Music, where he gained both his Batchelor of Music and Postgraduate Diploma in Performance. During his time at college he was principal horn with the Symphony and Chamber Orchestra and had the pleasure of performing with the London Symphony and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras as part of their ‘side by side’ scheme. Since leaving college Oliver has been carving a career for himself as a free lance musician and has performed with Sinfonia Cymru, English Concert Orchestra, City of Birmingham Touring Opera, South Bank Sinfonietta and the National Musicians Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his professional performing work Oliver also enjoys teaching for Hertfordshire Music Service and is part of the Live Music Now scheme with his horn quartet.
