David Childs is a Countess of Munster Recital Scheme Young Artist, and it was in this capacity that he and accompanist Harvey Davies visited the Riverhouse Barn, home of the Elmbridge Music Club last weekend and gave two exciting recitals.

During the afternoon David and Harvey presented their '91Young Person'92s Guide to the Euphonium'92 in the form of an interactive recital for the Elmbridge '91Junior'92 Music Club. The programme featured a variety of different music, a demonstration of how brass instruments work (using hosepipes) and a '91question time'92 giving an opportunity to the children (and their parents!) to ask questions relating to playing a brass instrument. Marion Hitch, the Music Club'92s secretary was delighted with their efforts and commented, '93If you want to keep an audience of children aged 4 to 70 (!) spell-bound - ask David and Harvey to call. The afternoon was full of music, fun and learning - I particularly enjoyed Amazing Grace played on the garden hosepipe!'94

During the recital, music of different forms from all over the world was featured including; the popular Air with Variations, virtuosi transcriptions, classical melodies, a Sonata, a Canon and even music with a '91rock'92 feel in the form of Ducati SPS 916. The recital was designed to showcase the euphonium whilst giving enjoyment, encouragement and inspiration to the younger generation. According to Marion Hitch, '93it was a complete success, everyone had a wonderful time. Please come back to Elmbridge again!'94

The 'Young Person'92s Guide to the Euphonium' featured the following music:

The Swan - Saint-Sa'ebns

*London Derry Air - Trad. Arr. Grainger
Varied Mood - Woodfield

Following the '91Junior'92 recital David and Harvey had a couple of hours break before the main event '96 the Elmbridge Music Club'92s evening recital. Their programme featured completely different repertoire from the children'92s recital with the first half concentrating on original, and in some cases contemporary music for euphonium. The second half showcased some more familiar repertoire in the form of classical transcriptions. Tony Rogers, the club'92s Honorary Secretary wrote,

'93Euphonium virtuoso, David Childs, with his fine piano accompanist, Harvey Davies, brought the Elmbridge Music Club'92s sixtieth season to a fitting climax with a concert that will convert even the most die-hard sceptics to the wonderful sound world of this most mellow of brass instruments. In a varied and demanding programme they showed musicality of the highest order, infected the audience with their palpable enthusiasm, enlightened them with interesting, and often amusing, commentary about the music and, above all, gave us an evening that was entertaining and great fun. They are to be highly recommended.'94
