In January 2014 the Flowers Band competed at the Butlins Mineworkers Championships and won. David also received the 'Best Soloist' award. In February David once again took to the contest stage with the Flowers Band, this time at Yeovil's Octagon Theatre. Again they were victorious, and again David was awarded the 'Best Soloist' prize. Earlier this month David was part of yet another winning performance with Flowers when they were crowned West of England Champions for a third successive year securring their place at the Royal Albert Hall National Championships later this year.



The West of England Championships took place at the Riviera Centre Torquay where 11 of the Region's finest bands performed Kenneth Downie's St Magnus; a work David had previously performed with the Cory Band at the 2004 European Championships where he won the best soloist award, and later the same year at the British Open Championships in Birmingham's Symphony Hall. 

Flowers' performance of Downie's most popular work certainly found favour with the audience, and David's contribution in particular was singled out by both adjudicators and critics alike.

Iwan Fox of 4BR commented, "Not many words can describe the quality of the euph playing - awesome... 
That was a very fine performance by anyone's standards - a clear winner. A fine band on very fine form."

Adjudicator Derek Broadbent remarked, "Euph soloist has style, has time, has class!...
Worth the wait and thank you all for a fine performance of great merit."

Fellow adjudicator Frank Renton wrote, "Euph very stylish, but quite brilliant before letter P...
A quite outstanding performance - incredibly detailed and delivered with great stability and musicianship."
