David played his first rehearsal with the Gloucester based Flowers band in December 2013. In January 2014 the Band competed at the Butlins Mineworkers Championships performing Robert Simpson's Energy and a 25 minute programme of lighter entertainment music. This programme featured David performing his own arrangement of Simone Mantia's showpiece Believe Me if all those Endearing Young Charms and Karl Jenkins' beautiful Lament from Stabat Mater. The Flowers band were awarded 1st place for both their entertainment programme and their performance of Energy taking away prize money of £12,000. David also received the 'Best Soloist' award.

At the start of February David once again took to the contest stage with the Flowers Band, this time at Yeovil's Octagon Theatre. Again the band had to perform a 25 minute entertainment programme, again they were victorious, and again David was awarded the 'Best Soloist' prize, this time performing Tutti Camerata's Carnival of Venice.
