Three Storis...Three Worlds was composed at the request of David Thornton and the Black Dyke Band in 2003. It received its premiere in this form on November 8th 2003 at St. Botolphs Church in Boston, Lincs. The work was an immediate hit with euphonium players all over the world encouraging the composer to make a version for solo euphonium, piano and percussion which was premiered in 2004, again by David Thornton. Three Stories'85Three Worlds received its third premiere earlier this month when David Childs and the Birmingham Symphonic Winds performed a new version for euphonium and wind orchestra at Birmingham'92s CBSO Centre.

Birmingham Symphonic Winds was established by its Musical Director, Keith Allen in 1992. Since then it has gained both a national and international reputation as one of the leading wind ensembles of its kind in the UK. David Childs commented,

'93It was great to perform with the BSW and a pleasure to work with their talented conductor, Keith Allen. However, performing Pete Meechan'92s concerto made the experience particularly special for me. When I first heard the work in its brass band form I was immediately taken with it; the music sounded exciting, full of new colours and a lot of fun to play, but when the opportunity to perform with the BSW arose, I was delighted Peter agreed to make a new version for wind orchestra specifically for the concert. Peter is a good friend and a superb musician '96 he created an extremely effective scoring, making balance between soloist and ensemble easily achievable. The new version was a hit with both the audience and performers - I'92m convinced the work will have a great future in this form.'94

The concert was performed to a capacity audience on March 5th and in addition to Peter Meechan, the concert also featured music from Philip Sparke, John Adams, Nigel Hess, William Walton and Martin Ellerby. Following the concert Keith Allen, BSW'92s founder and musical director commented,

"to perform such an exciting new concerto was a unique experience - the players enjoyed the challenge and the audience reaction was overwhelming - talented soloist David Childs brought both flair and style to Peter Meechan'92s Three Stories...Three Worlds."
