David & Robert during the premiere performance with Cory.

Following the performance one reviewer wrote, '93The world premiere of 'UFO Concerto' was an immense 25-minute vehicle for the abundant talents of David Childs. Subtly coloured with piano and harp, the piece was beautifully scored with its approachable vein of melody allied to technical demands that were quite literally Childs play in the hands of the soloist.'94

New York based composer Johan De Meij made the trip across the pond for the performance and was equally impressed. '93Dave Childs and the Cory Band with Bob Childs conducting gave a superb world premiere of UFO Concerto. Thank you all for the dream start. Now I'92m looking forward to hearing it in its Wind Orchestra form too!'94

Well Johan won'92t have to wait long! Following a performance in the USA with Jason Ham and the Peabody Wind Ensemble, David & Robert Childs will be giving the first British performance of UFO for euphonium & Wind Orchestra when they appear as guests of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain next month.

Kit Shepperd, Orchestral Administrator is delighted the duo have accepted the invitation to work with the orchestra and is looking forward to Robert directing the band on a programme which also includes works from Kenneth Hesketh and Peter Graham. '93Robert has an international reputation as soloist, educator and conductor. We'92ve had the privilege of working with him as soloist in the past and we'92re delighted he has agreed to return as our guest conductor for 2012.'94

Meanwhile, David is also looking forward to the experience: "Having recently given the World Premiere of 'UFO' with brass band, I imagine the performance with wind orchestra will be quite different. The balance between soloist and wind orchestra should be easier and I guess there will be more opportunities to explore texture and tonality too. I'm delighted my Dad is conducting, it will make life a lot easier for me!"

The concerts featuring David, Robert & the NYWO will take place in Banbury and the Dukes Hall of London'92s Royal Academy of Music on the 14th & 15th of April. Further details are available from www.nywo.org.uk

In addition, David will also be giving the Dutch premiere of De Meij'92s UFO Concerto a month later with the highly acclaimed Harmonie St. Micha'ebl van Thorn. On May 17th David will join the Dutch Wind Symphony for a concert at the Theatre Orangerie in Roermond, before flying back out for a further performance with the same orchestra on June 10th in Eindhoven. Further details of both these concerts can be found by visiting www.harmoniethorn.nl
