| David to appear in Star line up at the BBC Proms |
| On Saturday 10th September David Childs will make his third appearance as a soloist at the world’s most prestigious music festival, the BBC Proms. |
In 2002 David made his Proms debut performing with the BBC Philharmonic at the Blue Peter Prom to a capacity audience in London’s Royal Albert Hall. Last year saw him perform again in the Royal Albert Hall where he gave the London Premiere of Alun Hoddinott’s Concerto for Euphonium & Orchestra with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, “The Sunne Rising – The King Will Ride”
This year David will perform on the Last night of the Proms together with New Zealand singing sensation Hayley Westerna and the BBC Philharmonic at Manchester’s Heaton Park forming one of five BBC Proms in the Park taking place on September 10th.
GMR presenter Heather Stott will be presenting Manchester’s Prom in the Park where the audience will be treated to an evening of thrilling live music-making from the BBC's local orchestra, the fabulous Philharmonic. The programme will include Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Walton’s Henry V, Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmilla and music from Lord of the Rings. Hayley Westerna will perform Schubert’s Ave Maria, Puccini’s O mio babbino caro in addition to popular Maouri Songs from her latest hit album. David’s solo spot will include a new orchestration of Morricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumble Bee and the famous Carnival of Venice.
Following his invitation to appear at this year’s Proms in the Park David commented,
“I’m thrilled, it’s a huge honour for me and the euphonium. When I performed the Hoddinott Concerto at last year’s Proms, it was probably the most important concert I’d ever given, but I think this could end up being just as significant. When I look at the other Proms in the Park taking place on the same night, I see Terry Wogan presenting the BBC Concert Orchestra in Hyde Park with G4, Simply Red, Andrea Bocelli and Nicola Benedetti. In Ireland the Ulster Orchestra will be joined by the stars of ‘Operatunity’, Denise Leigh and Jane Gilchrist. Aled Jones is presenting Wales’ Proms in the Park from Swansea featuring the BBC National Orchestra of Wales with guest singer Katherine Jenkins, and in Glasgow the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra together with Dougie MacLean and his band will be giving Scotland’s Prom in the Park. For me to perform with this kind of company, alongside Hayley Westerna and the BBC Philharmonic is extremely special for me - I’m sure it will be an experience I’ll enjoy and cherish for a long time to come.”
Each ‘Proms in the Park’ venue will have its own distinctive concert before joining together with big-screen link-ups for the live relay of the famous finale of the Last Night of the Proms from the Royal Albert Hall.
BBC Proms in the Park Manchester will be broadcast live on GMR whilst televised highlights including a solo item from David Childs will be shown as part of BBC1 and BBC2's live coverage of the Last Night of the Proms. Big Screens will also broadcast live from Chamberlain Square in Birmingham, Clayton Square in Liverpool and Victoria Square in Hull.
