 David in action with Buy As You View As the Buy As You View Band were crowned Radio Wales Band of the Year, individual honours went to David Childs who scooped the award for best soloist. The Radio Wales Band of the Year competition began earlier in 2006 when 12 of the Principality’s finest bands entered the recording studio to give short concert performances to be aired on BBC Radio Cymru and adjudicated by well respected musicians. The competition was a ‘knock out’ affair with 12 bands quickly whittled down to 6, before 3 were selected for a grand final which took place at the Princess of Wales Theatre, Port Talbot on Saturday 25th November 2006. Throughout the competition, more than 25 soloists were featured with the various competing bands, but it was David Childs who took the soloist prize with his effortless performance of Peter Graham’s Brillante which formed part of Buy As You View’s winning programme. David commented, “I was obviously delighted to pick up the award, but the important aspect was the band’s performance which saw us win by 5 clear points. I feel privileged to play in an ensemble with so many other fine musicians and I genuinely would not have minded if the award had gone to our horn soloist Owen Farr, trombone soloist Chris Thomas or cornet soloist Ian Williams. They were all superb and contributed greatly to this fantastic result for the band.” |
