A Background to the Disc.
The word ‘Tribute’ can be defined as an expression of gratitude or praise: something said or given to show respect or admiration. Last year we celebrated 100 years since the birth of Gilbert Vinter (1909-1969), without doubt one of the most important composers to grace the brass band movement. In addition to his groundbreaking test-piece compositions for brass band, he also contributed three chamber music gems in the form of brass band quartets. By recording these quartets it is our intention to pay tribute to Gilbert Vinter and also the group of talented musicians who had the foresight to commission the works.
Vinter’s quartets were all composed at the request of members from the GUS (footwear) Band; a quartet consisting of David Read (cornet), John Berryman (cornet), John Cobley (tenor horn) and the legendary Trevor Groom (euphonium). This quartet experienced unprecedented success in the contest field and represent a group of musicians amongst the most respected and admired in the brass band movement today. Through this recording we show our gratitude to the great GUS (footwear) quartet who made the first recording of Vinter’s quartets 40 years ago.
In addition to featuring the music of Gilbert Vinter we are also very privileged to include on this recording original quartet compositions by five other important and well respected composers: John Golland, Edward Gregson, Joseph Horovitz, Roger Payne and Philip Sparke. Rehearsing and recording their music was an extremely rewarding experience for us. We genuinely hope this recording will encourage other brass band musicians to perform in a chamber music setting and most importantly rekindle interest in some fine original compositions which are rarely heard today.
