Roy Noble OBE

On August 24th David was invited to appear on the prime time 'Roy Noble' breakfast show broadcast on BBC Radio Wales. In addition to playing tracks from David's 'Hear My Prayer' album, David was also quizzed about his upbringing in music and his plans for the future. A comical moment on the show took place when David gave Roy Noble OBE his first euphonium lesson live on air! "Roy was fantastic and a pleasure to meet, but I'm not sure his future lies in brass playing!" commented David.

Roy keeps an online diary and following the show wrote, "Music moved us this morning. David Childs came in to talk about his life and times and the fact that he will be at Swansea at Proms in the Park on the 8th September. David is from a very famous Brass Band family in Tredegar, and he is an internationally acclaimed euphonium player. His dad continues to be his teacher and they will both be performing at Swansea's Singleton Park on the 8th. We had a lovely chat and he is talented yet easy man to get on with. I wish him well in the future."

Following a powerful article in today'92s Western Mail newspaper (5th September), the current state of Welsh banding was discussed on air this evening on the Principality's national 'Wales Today' television news programme at 6.30pm.

The article by journalist Rhodri Clark under the by-line '93Brass bands hit as pushy parents give children the runaround'92 highlighted the problems faced by bands in Wales as they try to survive amid a lack of lottery grant funding for instruments, less hours of one-one peripatetic teaching opportunities in schools, loss of players to university and a poor image profile.

The article has led to the national news programme devoting time this evening to the problem, with reporter Nick Pallett interviewing Philip Morris, 4BR Editor Iwan Fox and euphonium star David Childs. David's contribution addressed what it takes to keep youngsters interested in playing brass instruments and also featured him playing the last few bars of '91Carnival of Venice'92 (complete with top F finish!) as a quick music insert whilst the '91live'92 segment of the feature went to the bandroom of the City of Cardiff Band directed by Gareth Ritter.

David is set for further television and radio appearances during the next week.
