On July 12th David will join Karl Jenkins and the Chamber Orchestra of Wales as the world famous composer returns to his home village to celebrate his 70th birthday and his astonishing career with a concert entitled 'Karl Jenkins & Friends' to close the 2014 Gower Festival.

Gower
The Gower - South Wales

Speaking about those performing in this special concert Karl Jenkins commented, "My guests will include euphonium virtuoso David Childs and former 'Royal Harpist' Catrin Finch, both of whom, it can be said without any exaggeration, are probably the finest exponents of their instrments in the world. The choir is Cor Caerdydd (choral director Gwawr Owen) with whom I have had the long association. The orchestra is the 'Chamber Orchestra of Wales' and Robert Nicholls (another 'local boy' who, at one time, had piano lessons with my father) is the organist."

Gower Fest

The Gower Festival is an annual music festival held in beautiful churches on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales. This concert will take place in the Tabernacle Chapel. Karl Jenkins commented, "It is both a privelege and an emotional experience for me to return to the Tabernacle CM Church for my 'local' concert celebrating my 70th birthday and 50 years as a professional musician. My formative years were spent in this chapel, where my father was choirmaster and organist for a time. This will be the sixth such event, to date, in this birthday year, following sellout concerts in Carnegie Hall- New York, the Classic FM concert at the WMC - Cardiff, Sweden (where my maternal grandfather came from), Dublin and the recent event at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Choral Society and this, in Penclawdd, is as precious to me as all the rest."

The concert will feature:
Palladio
Pie Jesu from Requiem
Tros Y Garreg from Harp Concerto
Adiemus
Organ Morgan
Armed Man: Chorale
A Troika? Tidy! from Euphonium Concerto
Song of the Bards
In Paradisum from Requiem
Lament from Stabat Mater
Agnus Dei & Benedictus from Armed Man
Dies Irae from Requiem

Speaking about David's contribution to the evening, Karl Jenkins commented, "A Troika? Tidy! is the name of the last movement of the euphonium concerto I composed for David Childs. David has performed this concerto all over the world and recently recorded the work with the BBC NOW. The other solo piece he will play is the Lament from my Stabat Mater. Originally written for solo contralto with words by my wife, Carol Barratt, this instrumental version features euphonium and strings."
