The annual Hendon Highlights, now in its 22nd season, promoted and hosted by the Hendon Band of the Salvation Army, took place on Saturday 4th March at Cadogan Hall. This 'state of the art' venue with its outstanding Byzantine tower is situated just behind Sloane Square and is the newest concert hall in London since 1972.

One of the Strenghts of the '91Highlights'92 has been the consistent ability to attract quality guest soloists. The comp'e8re described them at the outset as stars and the three guest performers lived up to that billing in all ways. What a joy to see soloists who not only perform with consummate technical ease, but immediately build rapport with the audience and communicate so effectively.

David Childs'92 virtuosic ability has built a remarkable reputation for such a young man and his desire to see the euphonium taken seriously has progressed the Childs dynasty to heights surpassing even that of his illustrious father and uncle. Lieutenant Colonel Ray Steadman-Allen, after one of David Childs'92 offerings declared, '93Virtuosi amaze you, inspire you and break your heart!'94 David did all of this with such gracious stage presence, endearing him to the audience on this, his second appearance at Hendon'92s festival. Philip Sparke'92s Harlequin and Peter Graham'92s Brillante were perfect vehicles in which to showcase his remarkable talent. Karl Jenkins'92 Benedictus, however provided one of the real highlights of the evening. Wonderful music and complete synergy between soloist and band engendered a real spirit of tranquillity.

The band was on superb form all evening under their conductor Stephen Cobb, performing a highly enjoyable programme of challenging repertoire. Vocalist Marjory Watson and Yamaha Percussion Artist Simone Rebello were simply fantastic, and together with David and the band provided a delightful and joyous '91Highlights'92 concert.

'91Hendon Highlights'92 will be back again on Saturday 3rd March 2007, this time with the Opera Babes '96 see you there!
